The PFU HHKB Professional Series Keycap Set "Fuji" Blank (English Layout) is a first-party keycap swap that changes how your HHKB looks without touching how it types. This article covers which boards it fits, whether blank caps are actually livable day to day, and who should skip it.
Overview
This set is the fourth release in PFU's HHKB Color Keycap Project, made exclusively for English-layout HHKB Professional models. The color is a soft wisteria purple, and because the caps are completely blank, nothing competes with that color visually.
The box contains 60 keycaps, a keycap puller, and an instruction manual.
Its positioning is clear: this is not a first purchase for someone who does not own an HHKB. It is a part for people already using an HHKB daily who want to personalize the look while leaving the tool itself untouched.
The electrostatic capacitive switches are unchanged, so typing feel stays the same. What changes is the color and the absence of legends.
Owner sentiment is strong. As captured in June 2026, the listing showed 4.7 out of 5 stars across 103 reviews, roughly a 94% positive score.
The review count is modest, which is expected for a product whose audience is limited to HHKB owners, but the rating suggests buyers are satisfied with the color and finish.
Compatibility Guide
The set fits the following English-layout HHKB Professional models.
| Compatible | Not compatible |
|---|---|
| HHKB Professional | HHKB Studio series |
| HHKB Professional2 | Japanese (JIS) layout models |
| HHKB Professional2 Type-S | Non-capacitive HHKB variants such as Lite |
| HHKB Professional BT | Standard Cherry MX mechanical keyboards |
| HHKB Professional HYBRID | |
| HHKB Professional HYBRID Type-S | |
| HHKB Professional Classic | |
| HHKB Professional Classic Type-S |
The right column matters most in practice. HHKB Studio is not supported. Studio looks similar from a distance but uses a different keycap mounting structure, so judging by appearance will get you a set that does not fit.
If you are unsure which model you own, check the model label on the underside of the board before ordering.
Layout is the other trap. This is a 60-key English-layout set and will not work on a Japanese-layout HHKB, which uses a different key count and different cap widths around the conversion keys.
If you use a JIS board, you need the Japanese-layout version of the same color.
There is also no cross-compatibility with Cherry MX keycaps. HHKB caps are not built around MX stems, so you cannot mix in a generic custom-keyboard keycap set — and equally, you cannot reuse this set on any non-HHKB board later.

The price was ¥8,250 including tax as captured on 21 June 2026, and again at the same figure when re-checked on 26 August 2026. Holding flat for over two months suggests a first-party accessory that rarely gets discounted.
Stock and sales can still move it, so check the product page for the current price before buying. Limited colors can also command a premium once sold out, and secondhand pricing at that point is a different market entirely.
Against the price of the keyboard itself this is a small add-on, but as a keycap set it is not cheap: 60 keys at ¥8,250 works out to roughly ¥137 per key. The question is whether the first-party fit and the color reproduction are worth that to you.
Cheaper generic PBT sets exist, but none of them fit an HHKB, so the realistic comparison set is PFU's own other colors.
Installation Notes
The swap needs no soldering and no firmware changes. Hook the included puller onto opposite corners of a cap and pull straight up — angled force scratches the stem and the cap sides.
Photograph your existing layout with a phone before you start; rearranging legended caps correctly later is more annoying than it sounds, and that one photo saves it.
Budget 15 to 30 minutes for a first full swap. Flip the board over and clear out dust while the caps are off — the finished result looks noticeably better.
Treat wide keys such as the spacebar more carefully than the rest. Note that keycap replacement is done at your own risk and scratches are possible, so read the included manual first.
Mixing With Other Sets
The HHKB Color Keycap Project has previously shipped Sakura, Wasabi, and Tampopo, alongside the standard white, ink, and snow sets. This matters because a full swap is not the only option.
You can leave your existing legended alphas in place and swap only the modifiers — Shift, Control, Fn, spacebar — into wisteria. That partial swap is the most realistic landing point for anyone unsure about going fully blank.
When planning a color scheme, remember that this wisteria is a low-saturation tone that does not assert itself on its own. Paired with ink it gains contrast; paired with white it reads soft and cohesive, which is the safer choice for an office desk.
If you plan to collect several sets, buy one first and judge the color in person — pale tones are exactly the ones that photograph and display inaccurately.
Best Use Cases
- HHKB owners who want to shape their desk — one of the few ways to change the look with zero effect on typing feel. The muted purple does not stand out in an office.
- Confident touch typists — you get the full benefit of blank caps. If you never look down, legends are noise rather than information.
- Collectors and multi-board owners — limited colors get hard to find once stock clears, and mixing with earlier releases produces something genuinely unique.
- People easing into blank keyboards — the partial-swap approach above removes most of the risk.
Before You Buy
Symbols are the real problem, not letters. Plenty of people who touch-type the alphabet still glance down for [, ], ;, ', -, and =.
If you write code or type a lot of punctuation, expect a measurable productivity dip on day one. Most people adapt within one to two weeks — just don't do the swap the week of a deadline.
You also have to memorize the Fn layer. The English-layout HHKB has no dedicated arrow or function row; those live behind Fn.
Some stock HHKB caps carry front-face legends as a reminder, and a blank set removes that cue too. If you have not internalized the Fn layer, this will be more disruptive than you expect.
Ordering the wrong variant is easy. Again: no HHKB Studio, no Japanese layout.
Listings show the Japanese-layout, English-layout, and center-printed versions of "Fuji" side by side under nearly identical names. Confirm both words — English layout and blank — before you check out.
Listing metadata itself can be wrong. Manufacturer, model number, and compatibility fields on retail pages are partly auto-populated and do not always match the physical product.
If something in the listing looks off, trust the product images and title, and cross-check the model number on the manufacturer's own product page.
Finally, this does not improve how the board feels. The capacitive switches are untouched.
If you want quieter typing, that is a Type-S model; if you want a different actuation feel, that is a switch-level question. A color swap changes neither, and buying it for that reason wastes the entire ¥8,250.

Avoid swapping during a busy period.
