Overview

The Synology MR2200ac is a mesh Wi-Fi router that leverages the networking expertise Synology has built through its NAS products. With tri-band support delivering up to 2.13Gbps, it provides a stable wireless environment throughout the home. It supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, covering a wide range of Wi-Fi 5 generation devices.
The standout feature is how easily you can build a mesh network. The router supports smart home-oriented mesh systems, and combining multiple units creates a seamless connection across large homes or offices. It also supports VPN setup, making it suitable for users who want secure remote access to their home network.

Connectivity & Compatibility

The router includes one Gigabit RJ-45 WAN port and one Gigabit RJ-45 LAN port for high-speed wired connections. A USB 3.0 port is available for connecting external storage or USB drives for network sharing.
For internet connectivity, it supports IPv4overIPv6 with both MAP-E and DS Lite, compatible with major Japanese ISPs offering IPv6 services. This helps avoid congested IPv4 traffic and provides a smoother internet experience.

Product Info

Released in December 2018, the MR2200ac sits in the mid-range tier of the market. Among tri-band mesh Wi-Fi routers, it offers a relatively accessible price point. As an official domestic distributor product, users receive various support services.
The dimensions are approximately 6cm (L) x 20cm (W) x 15cm (H), weighing about 450g — a typical size for a router that fits easily on a shelf or desk.

Best Use Cases

  • Homeowners with large or multi-story houses struggling with Wi-Fi dead zones. The mesh capability extends coverage throughout the home, maintaining stable connections even with multiple units. If you only need to cover a small apartment, a single unit may be sufficient.
  • Users who want to share external storage over the network without investing in a full NAS. The USB 3.0 port enables easy network sharing for documents and media. For heavy, always-on storage needs, a dedicated NAS would be more appropriate.
  • Remote workers or frequent travelers who need secure access to their home network. The VPN support allows safe connections from outside, letting you reach files on your home network. Those unfamiliar with VPN configuration may find the initial setup challenging.
