Overview

The Seagate Desktop HDD 500GB, model ST500DM, is a 3.5-inch internal hard drive designed for desktop PCs. It features a SATA 6Gb/s interface and a 7200RPM spindle speed, making it a suitable entry-level option for storage expansion and data backup. This particular unit is sold as a refurbished product, offering a more affordable price compared to brand-new drives.
With a capacity of 500GB, this drive provides ample space for the operating system, applications, photos, videos, and music. The 7200RPM rotation speed ensures faster data access than 5400RPM models, reducing the feeling of sluggishness during everyday tasks. The SATA 6Gb/s interface ensures compatibility with most modern desktop motherboards.
In the current market, where SSDs are becoming the norm, this HDD targets users who need cost-effective bulk storage or a reliable backup drive. As a refurbished unit, it offers a budget-friendly way to expand storage capacity without breaking the bank.

Compatibility Guide

This drive uses the standard 3.5-inch form factor and a SATA 6Gb/s interface. It fits into most desktop PC cases that have a 3.5-inch drive bay. However, some small form factor cases and laptops do not have such bays, so always check your case specifications before purchasing.
To install, you will need a SATA data cable and a SATA power connector from your power supply. Ensure your motherboard has an available SATA port and that your PSU has a spare SATA power cable. If you plan to use this as a boot drive, you will need to set the boot order in BIOS/UEFI.
When adding this drive to an existing system, verify that there is an empty drive bay and an available SATA port. Also, consider the total power draw of your system, especially if you are adding multiple drives. The power consumption of a single HDD is modest, but it adds up.

Product Info

This product is part of Seagate's Desktop HDD series, with model number ST500DM. It offers 500GB of storage capacity, a 7200RPM spindle speed, and a 16MB cache. The interface is SATA 6Gb/s, which maximizes data transfer rates.
As a refurbished item, the price is lower than that of a new drive. Warranty and return policies vary by seller, so it is essential to check them before making a purchase.
In terms of market positioning, this is an entry-level product. While SSDs dominate the market for speed, HDDs remain relevant for bulk storage and backup. This drive is ideal for users who prioritize cost savings and need reliable long-term storage.

Best Use Cases

  • Budget-conscious users looking to expand storage: Refurbished drives offer significant savings compared to new HDDs or SSDs, making them an attractive option for those on a tight budget.
  • Users needing a backup drive: A large-capacity HDD is a reliable and cost-effective solution for backing up important data, such as documents, photos, and videos.
  • Long-term data archiving: For storing large media libraries or archives, HDDs provide more capacity per dollar than SSDs.
  • Building a secondary PC or home server: If your case has a 3.5-inch bay, this drive is easy to install and configure.
However, this drive is not suitable for:
  • Users who need fast boot times and application loading: SSDs are significantly faster than HDDs, so if speed is a priority, consider an SSD instead.
  • Users who prioritize silence: HDDs produce audible noise and vibration, which may be distracting in quiet environments.

Things to Consider

Since this is a refurbished unit, the condition and usage history may vary. Always purchase from a reputable seller and review their warranty and return policy before buying.
The 500GB capacity may be insufficient for users who store large game libraries or high-resolution video files. If you anticipate needing more space, consider a 1TB or larger drive.
Additionally, HDDs are slower and more susceptible to physical shock than SSDs. If you need a drive for portable use or in environments with frequent movement, an SSD is a better choice.
