Overview

The Samsung-3P MU-PE2T0S/WW T7 Shield Portable SSD 2TB Black is a rugged external solid-state drive from Samsung's T7 Shield series. It delivers sequential read speeds of up to 1,050MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,000MB/s, making it up to 9.5 times faster than a typical external HDD. The drive features an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance, along with drop resistance up to 3 meters, ensuring reliable performance in demanding environments.
This portable SSD connects via USB 3.2 Gen 2 and works with a wide range of devices, including PCs, Macs, Android smartphones, and tablets. The high-tech rubber exterior helps manage heat, maintaining stable performance even during large file transfers. In the market, it sits in the mid-to-high tier of portable SSDs, appealing to creative professionals and users who need dependable storage in challenging conditions.

Compatibility Guide

The T7 Shield uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface and is compatible with devices featuring USB-C ports, including PCs, Macs, Android smartphones, and tablets. When connected to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, it achieves its maximum transfer speed of 1,050MB/s; however, connecting to USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 2.0 ports will limit performance to those standards.
Included USB-C to C and USB-C to A cables ensure compatibility with older PCs that only have USB-A ports. The drive comes pre-formatted with exFAT, so it works out of the box on both Windows and macOS without additional drivers. It can also be used with game consoles and cameras, though you should verify compatibility with each specific device.

Product Info

The Samsung-3P MU-PE2T0S/WW T7 Shield Portable SSD 2TB Black was released in 2022 and remains available through official channels and major online retailers. The 2TB model is priced around 162,840 yen, which is higher than typical portable SSDs of the same capacity, reflecting its IP65 water and dust resistance and 3-meter drop durability.
Samsung offers a 3-year warranty, and the Samsung Magician software allows users to check drive health, update firmware, and set password protection. In the market, this drive occupies the mid-to-high tier, targeting professionals who prioritize durability over cost savings.

Best Use Cases

  • Outdoor photographers and videographers: Ideal for backing up large footage on location. The IP65 rating and 3-meter drop resistance protect data from rain, dust, and accidental falls, making it a reliable companion in the field.
  • Business professionals handling large files: Suitable for carrying presentations, design files, or other critical data securely. Fast transfer speeds enable quick access to files while traveling.
  • Gamers needing extra storage: Works as an external drive for game data on PCs or consoles. The high read speeds help reduce load times, though it is not designed for playing PS5 games directly.
  • Users prioritizing data safety: Perfect for those worried about drops or spills damaging their data. However, it is not fully waterproof, so submersion should be avoided.

Things to Consider

While the T7 Shield offers IP65 dust and water resistance, it is not fully waterproof and should not be submerged in water. The 3-meter drop resistance is based on manufacturer testing, and real-world conditions may still cause damage.
The price is notably higher than standard portable SSDs of the same capacity, which may be overkill for users who do not need ruggedness. Additionally, older PCs without USB 3.2 Gen 2 support will see reduced transfer speeds, limiting the drive's full potential.
Competitors include other rugged portable SSDs and more affordable standard models. If durability is not a priority, a regular portable SSD offers better value for money.
