Overview

The KIOXIA Portable SSD SSD-PKP1.0U3G2BR is an external solid-state drive that delivers read speeds of up to approximately 1,050MB/s over a USB3.2 Gen2 connection. With 1TB of storage capacity, it serves a wide range of purposes, from backing up a PC to carrying large files between devices or expanding storage on game consoles. The drive uses KIOXIA's domestically produced BiCS FLASH and an optimized SLC cache design, which improves transfer speeds compared to the previous generation.
This portable SSD is compatible with Type-C equipped iPhones and Apple's Files app, and it has been verified to work with game consoles such as PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It also supports SSD Utility management software, offering password protection based on the TCG Opal 2.01 specification with 256-bit AES hardware encryption. The lightweight aluminum housing withstands drops from up to 122cm and meets MIL-STD durability standards.
Positioned in the entry-to-mid tier of USB3.2 Gen2 portable SSDs, this model balances fast transfer speeds with rugged build quality. It is online retailers-exclusive model that includes a wallpaper download bonus.

Compatibility Guide

The drive supports USB3.2 Gen2 and works with devices that have USB Type-C or Type-A ports. Two cables are included: a USB3.2 Gen2 Type-C to A cable (30cm) and a Type-C to C cable (30cm), ensuring broad device compatibility.
Supported devices include Windows PCs, Macs, Type-C equipped iPhones, and game consoles such as PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Note that the password protection feature is only available on Windows.
While the drive can connect to USB2.0 ports, transfer speeds will be limited to USB2.0 specifications. To achieve maximum performance, connect it to a USB3.2 Gen2 port.

Product Info

This is the 1TB model in KIOXIA's portable SSD lineup, with a maximum read speed of approximately 1,050MB/s. It uses the USB3.2 Gen2 interface, delivering roughly twice the transfer speed of older USB3.1 Gen1 products.
In the market, it sits in the mid-tier of portable SSDs, targeting a broad audience from creators and gamers to business users who need both speed and durability.

Best Use Cases

  • Creators who frequently move large photo and video files. The up-to-1,050MB/s transfer speed significantly reduces the time needed to move large files. Not ideal for those working in USB2.0 environments where the speed advantage is lost.
  • Gamers who want to expand storage on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. The drive is verified to work with these consoles and can help reduce game load times. Not suitable for those expecting to replace internal console storage.
  • Business users who need to carry data on the go. The MIL-STD-compliant durability and lightweight aluminum body protect data during travel. Not the best value for users who keep a drive permanently connected to a PC, where an external HDD may offer better cost per gigabyte.

Things to Consider

Although this drive supports USB3.2 Gen2, the actual transfer speed depends on the port of the connected device. If you plug it into a USB3.2 Gen1 or USB2.0 port, speeds will be limited accordingly. Check your device's ports to ensure you can take advantage of the maximum speed.
The password protection feature is Windows-only, so Mac and game console users cannot use the encryption function. The SSD Utility software is also Windows-centric.
At 1TB, the capacity is adequate for typical backup needs, but if you work with very large files such as 4K video editing projects, you may want to consider a 2TB or larger model.

FAQ

Q: Can I use this with a PS5?
A: Yes, it has been verified to work with the PS5. You can use it as a USB-connected external storage device to save and play game data.
Q: Does it work with a Mac?
A: Yes, it works with Macs. However, the password protection feature is Windows-only, so you cannot use the encryption function on a Mac.
Q: What speed can I expect when connected to a USB3.0 port?
A: When connected to a USB3.0 (USB3.2 Gen1) port, the transfer speed is limited to the approximately 5Gbps bandwidth of that interface. You will not achieve the maximum 1,050MB/s that is possible with a USB3.2 Gen2 port.
