Details

Overview

Provincial Player is a curious relic from the late-90s Russian PC gaming scene, now restored and re-released on Steam. Originally launched in 1999, this adventure game casts you as Art Billy, a professional billiards player with a story to unfold.

The game blends classic point-and-click questing with a collection of mini-games, including billiards and arcade challenges, all wrapped in a darkly humorous, atmospheric 2D presentation.

What makes this release special is the effort behind it. The developers, Gershwin Research Group, reverse-engineered and rebuilt the game from recovered source code.

The result is a version that runs on modern systems with widescreen support, improved stability, and restored video and audio playback. Original bugs have been fixed, and new features like Steam Achievements, subtitles, and Steam Cloud support have been added.

Highlights

Classic 1999 adventure: A faithful restoration of a Russian point-and-click quest, complete with its original charm and quirks.
Mini-game variety: Beyond the adventure, you'll play billiards, blackjack, slot machines, and arcade games, adding a casino-like flavor to the experience.
Modern enhancements: Widescreen support, Steam Achievements, subtitles, and Steam Cloud integration make this old gem accessible to today's players.

Who It's For

If you're a fan of vintage adventure games, especially those with a dark comedic edge, Provincial Player offers a unique slice of gaming history. It's also a great pick for players curious about Russian PC gaming culture of the late 90s.

The mini-games add a casual layer, but the core is a story-driven point-and-click experience. Note that the game includes mature content: sexual themes, gambling elements, strong language, and depictions of alcohol and tobacco use.

The interface supports multiple languages, with full audio in Russian.
