Display check (dead pixels, uniformity, banding)

Full-screen colours and gradients for checking a monitor by eye. Runs entirely in your browser.

On phones and tablets the browser bars and notches can leave part of the screen uncovered, and many OLED panels look different at an angle. Use a PC monitor for a reliable check.

How to use

  1. Press a colour or gradient tile to open it full screen.
  2. Tap/click, Space or → for the next pattern, ← for the previous, Esc to exit.
  3. View solid colours from the front, in a dim room, and look for points that stay a different colour (dead or stuck pixels) and for patches that look brighter, darker or tinted (uniformity).
  4. On the gradients, look for visible steps (banding). The stepped strip on the gray ramp shows what coarse steps look like.

Worked example

Example: on the black screen you see one bright green dot, and it is still there on white and red. That is a candidate stuck pixel. Note where it is and compare with the maker’s pixel policy.

Limits

  • This is a visual check. It cannot measure brightness, colour accuracy or response time, and it does not declare a panel faulty.
  • What you see depends on the display’s settings, the browser’s colour handling, your room and your eyes.
  • Gradients are drawn by the browser; the display may add dithering that hides or changes banding.
