Overview

The ASUS ThunderboltEX 4 is a PCIe expansion card that adds Thunderbolt 4 connectivity to your desktop PC. With up to 40 Gbps bidirectional bandwidth, it's ideal for connecting high-speed storage, external displays, and docking stations. When paired with a compatible ASUS motherboard, you can easily enable full Thunderbolt 4 functionality.

Key Features

  • Two Thunderbolt 4 ports supporting up to 40 Gbps data transfer
  • Two Mini DisplayPort inputs for video output via DisplayPort
  • PCIe 3.0 x4 interface ensures sufficient bandwidth
  • 6-pin PCIe power connector for stable power delivery
  • Dedicated Thunderbolt header cable connects to the motherboard for full feature support

Compatibility Guide

This card requires an ASUS motherboard with a Thunderbolt header (TB_HEADER). Compatible models include ROG STRIX Z690 series, TUF GAMING Z690 series, and others. Check your motherboard's specifications before purchase. You'll need a PCIe 3.0 x4 or higher slot, and a free 6-pin PCIe power connector from your power supply.

Ideal Use Cases

  • Creator PC: Connect Thunderbolt 4 SSDs or external GPU enclosures for fast data transfers and video editing workflows
  • Multi-display setup: Drive up to two 4K displays at 60Hz or a single 8K display via Thunderbolt 4
  • Laptop integration: Use a Thunderbolt 4 dock to share peripherals and data between your desktop and laptop

Important Notes

  • Without a Thunderbolt header on the motherboard, some features (hot-plug, daisy-chaining) may be limited. Basic Thunderbolt device connection via PCIe is still possible but with reduced functionality.
  • Always connect the 6-pin PCIe power connector; failure to do so may cause instability.
  • Firmware updates may be required. Download the latest drivers and firmware from the ASUS support website.
