Overview

The ASRock Z890 Taichi is a flagship ATX motherboard built on the Intel Z890 chipset, designed for Intel Core Ultra processors (Arrow Lake). With a 26-phase VRM and advanced cooling, it delivers rock-solid stability for overclocking. It also features PCIe 5.0 slots and up to three PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots, letting you fully leverage the latest GPUs and SSDs.

Key Features

  • 26-phase (20+1+1) SPS VRM design — stable power delivery under heavy loads
  • Dual PCIe 5.0 x16 slots (x16/x8 mode) — supports the latest GPUs and multi-GPU setups
  • Up to three PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots with heatsinks — ultra-fast NVMe SSD support
  • 5G LAN + Wi-Fi 7 (BE200) — blazing-fast wired and wireless networking
  • Premium audio (Realtek ALC4082 + ESS SABRE9218 DAC) — high-fidelity sound output

Compatibility Guide

  • Socket: LGA1851 (Intel Core Ultra 200 series only). LGA1700 coolers are physically compatible, but some may require a new mounting kit from the manufacturer.
  • Memory: DDR5 only, up to 192GB across 4 slots. Supports XMP/EXPO profiles; rated for DDR5-6400+ (OC).
  • Form Factor: ATX (305mm x 244mm). Fits standard ATX cases; a mid-tower or larger with good cable management is recommended.
  • PCIe: Two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots (first CPU-direct, second chipset-based x8). Multi-GPU is possible (no official SLI/CrossFire), but the second slot is limited to x8 bandwidth.
  • Storage: 4 M.2 slots (3x PCIe 5.0 x4, 1x PCIe 4.0 x4) and 8 SATA ports. When using PCIe 5.0 SSDs, watch out for heatsink height clearance.
  • Power: Main 24-pin ATX + dual 8-pin CPU power. Recommended PSU: 850W or higher for high-end GPU builds.

Ideal Builds

  • High-End Gaming PC: Pair with Core Ultra 9 285K and RTX 5090/5080 for maxed-out 4K gaming.
  • Creator Workstation: Use multiple PCIe 5.0 SSDs and high-capacity DDR5 for video editing and 3D rendering.
  • Overclocking Enthusiast: The robust VRM and detailed BIOS let you push CPU and memory to their limits.

Upgrade Considerations

  • CPU Cooler Compatibility: LGA1851 shares the same mounting hole pattern as LGA1700, so most LGA1700 coolers work. However, check with the cooler manufacturer for any required retention kit updates.
  • Bottleneck Risk: Pairing this board with a Core Ultra 5 245K may leave many features underutilized. If budget allows, step up to a higher-tier CPU.
  • Overspec Warning: For mid-range GPUs like RTX 5060, the Z890's PCIe 5.0 and Wi-Fi 7 are overkill. A B860 motherboard would be more cost-effective.
  • Future Upgrade Path: LGA1851 is expected to support only Arrow Lake CPUs. Don't count on upgrading to the next generation on this socket.
