Overview
The StarTech.com PEXUSB3S4 is a PCI Express expansion card that adds four USB 3.0 ports to your desktop PC. It's an ideal solution when you've run out of rear USB ports or need to connect multiple high-speed peripherals like external drives or VR headsets. Powered by a Renesas chipset, each port delivers up to 5Gbps transfer speed.
Key Features
- Adds 4 USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1) ports
- PCIe 2.0 x4 interface (compatible with x4/x8/x16 slots)
- Up to 5Gbps per port
- Bus-powered — no extra power cable needed
- Includes low-profile bracket for small form factor cases
Compatibility Guide
This card uses PCIe 2.0 x4 but works in PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 slots with full backward compatibility. It fits any standard ATX, Micro-ATX, or Mini-ITX motherboard with an available PCIe slot. The included low-profile bracket allows installation in slim cases. No additional power connector is required; all power comes from the PCIe slot.
Ideal Use Cases
- Expanding USB connectivity on a desktop PC
- Connecting multiple external HDDs/SSDs for creative workflows
- Adding ports for VR headsets or capture devices in a gaming rig
- Mini-ITX builds with limited rear I/O
Upgrade Considerations
The PCIe 2.0 x4 interface provides roughly 2GB/s total bandwidth, which is sufficient for four USB 3.0 ports in most real-world scenarios. However, if you plan to saturate all ports simultaneously with high-speed NVMe external enclosures, you may encounter a bottleneck. For typical use (external SSDs, hubs, peripherals), performance is excellent. The card is plug-and-play on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
