The OWC Envoy Pro Elektron is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) external enclosure designed for NVMe M.2 SSDs. It delivers real-world transfer speeds of up to 1000 MB/s, making it ideal for everyday file transfers, backups, and portable storage. The tool-free installation lets you slide in any M.2 NVMe SSD from 2230 to 2280 size without screws. Its aluminum body acts as a heatsink, keeping the drive cool during sustained use. Powered entirely over the USB-C cable, it requires no external power adapter. A USB-A adapter is included for compatibility with older ports.
Key Features
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) interface with up to 1000 MB/s sequential read/write
- Supports M.2 NVMe SSDs in sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280
- Tool-free, screwless installation
- Aluminum enclosure for effective heat dissipation
- Bus-powered via USB-C; includes USB-A adapter
Compatibility Guide
For maximum performance, connect to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) USB-C port. It works with USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) and USB 2.0 ports at reduced speeds. Thunderbolt 3/4 ports will operate in USB fallback mode, not at Thunderbolt speeds. Only NVMe M.2 SSDs with key M are supported; SATA M.2 drives are not compatible.
Ideal Use Cases
- Expanding laptop storage without opening the chassis
- High-speed portable backup or scratch drive for creative professionals
- Carrying large project files between workstations
- Adding external storage to a desktop without installing an internal drive
Considerations
Because USB 3.2 Gen 2 caps out at around 1000 MB/s, you won't see the full speed of a high-end PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. However, for most real-world tasks this is more than adequate. Some power-hungry SSDs may cause instability when bus-powered; if that happens, use a powered USB hub or choose a low-power SSD.
