## Overview
The Synology DiskStation DS1817+ is an 8-bay NAS kit designed for high-capacity storage needs. It carries the model number DS1817+(2GB) and comes with an Intel Atom quad-core CPU running at 2.4GHz (64-bit) plus 2GB of RAM. Hard drives are not included, so you will need to supply eight SATA drives separately.
This unit is optimized for centralized data management and encryption tasks, featuring an AES-NI hardware encryption engine. With eight bays, it suits photo and video archiving, backup duties, or serving as a file server for a small office. You can also attach an expansion unit to support up to 18 drives in total, which is a notable advantage for growing storage needs.

## Connectivity & Compatibility
All eight bays on the DS1817+ support SATA interfaces, accommodating both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch HDDs or SSDs. The unit ships with four 1GbE LAN ports to help avoid network bottlenecks during transfers.
A PCIe slot is available inside, letting you install a 10GbE network interface card (NIC) or a dual M.2 SSD adapter card. Adding M.2 SSDs as cache enables a high-IOPS system cache, delivering faster data access than a pure HDD setup.
Memory can be expanded up to 16GB, and the system supports dual-channel configurations. This headroom is useful in virtualized environments or when many clients need simultaneous access.

## Product Info
The Synology DiskStation DS1817+ sits in the upper-mid range of the DiskStation lineup as an 8-bay model. It balances a quad-core CPU with strong expandability, targeting everyone from power users to small offices.
Check the retailer's page for the latest price. It is sold as a barebone kit without drives, so you will need to budget for storage separately. The manufacturer provides a three-year warranty.

## Best Use Cases
- Creators who want to centralize large photo and video libraries. The 8-bay layout allows a high-capacity archive, while AES-NI encryption keeps data protected. It is overkill for users who only need a couple of drives.
- IT staff running a file server for a small office. Four 1GbE LAN ports and the expansion slot handle concurrent access from multiple clients. It is not a fit for individuals with modest data volumes.
- Technicians evaluating storage for virtualized environments. iSCSI support with VMware vSphere 6, VAAI, Windows ODX, and OpenStack Cinder turns the unit into block-based storage. Home users will find the feature set excessive.
