## Overview
The KIOXIA EXCERIA G2 is an NVMe M.2 SSD featuring the company's proprietary BiCS FLASH 3D TLC NAND. The 500GB model (SSD-CK500N3G2/N) delivers sequential read speeds up to 2100 MB/s and write speeds up to 1700 MB/s over a PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 interface. It strikes an excellent balance between performance and affordability, making it a solid choice for budget-conscious builders who want the speed of NVMe without breaking the bank. Backed by a 5-year warranty and Japanese manufacturing quality, this drive offers peace of mind for everyday use.

## Compatibility Guide
The EXCERIA G2 uses the M.2 Type 2280 form factor and supports the NVMe 1.3c protocol over PCIe Gen 3.0 x4. It is backward compatible with PCIe Gen 2.0 and Gen 1.0 slots, though speeds will be limited. Ensure your motherboard's M.2 slot supports NVMe; some older boards only support SATA M.2 drives. For PlayStation 5 internal expansion, PCIe Gen 4.0 is recommended, so this drive is better suited as an external USB SSD for consoles.

## Product Info
Launched in 2021, the EXCERIA G2 series remains a staple in the entry-to-mid-range NVMe market. It comes with a 5-year limited warranty (ending when SSD Utility reports zero remaining life) and is backed by KIOXIA's official Japanese support. The included SSD Utility software allows monitoring of drive health and firmware updates.

## Best Use Cases
* Gaming PC Storage: With read speeds of 2100 MB/s, game load times are dramatically faster than HDDs or SATA SSDs. Ideal for budget gaming builds where every yen counts. However, if you install many modern AAA titles, consider the 1TB version.
* Creative Work Drive: Sufficient for photo editing caches and light video editing. The 1700 MB/s write speed handles large RAW file transfers smoothly. Heavy 4K video editors may want higher TBW and capacity.
* Laptop or Secondary PC Upgrade: Low power consumption and minimal heat make it perfect for laptop upgrades. Replacing a SATA SSD with this NVMe drive yields a noticeable performance boost in everyday tasks.
* Who Should Avoid: Users requiring PCIe Gen 4.0 speeds (over 5000 MB/s), those needing 1TB+ capacity, or anyone with constant heavy write workloads (e.g., 24/7 server logging) should look elsewhere.

## Things to Consider
As a PCIe Gen 3.0 drive, the EXCERIA G2 is significantly slower than modern Gen 4.0 SSDs. However, for typical desktop use, web browsing, and gaming, the difference is barely perceptible. The 500GB capacity can fill up quickly if you install multiple large games or store media files. The TBW rating of 200TB is modest; heavy daily writers may exhaust it sooner, but for average users, it will last well beyond the warranty period. Also, ensure you purchase from an authorized reseller (Buffalo Direct in Japan) to maintain the warranty.
## FAQ
Q: Can I use this SSD inside a PlayStation 5?
A: The PS5 supports M.2 NVMe SSDs but recommends PCIe Gen 4.0 with read speeds above 5500 MB/s. This Gen 3.0 drive will work internally but will be bottlenecked, so it's better used as an external USB drive.
Q: Do I need a heatsink for this SSD?
A: The EXCERIA G2 runs relatively cool. Most motherboards include a built-in M.2 heatsink that is sufficient. An additional heatsink is not required unless your case has poor airflow.
Q: Does this SSD have DRAM cache?
A: Yes, the EXCERIA G2 series includes a DRAM cache. This improves random read/write performance and overall stability compared to DRAM-less SSDs, making it a reliable choice for an OS drive.
